The story behind the work

Die Geschichte hinter dem Werk

In 2010 Arndt and I were in Lahaina on Maui. We stayed at a bed and breakfast right on the water, looking out towards Molokaʻi. I remember the coast, people on stand-up paddleboards and dogs on the beach, the light and the ease of those days.

A brilliant red flower became the centre of the painting. Red against green was a strong conversation of colours for me; the green forms the counterpoint to the blossom.

Today I also think of historic Lahaina as I was able to experience it before the devastating fires of 2023. Since then, the memory of old Lahaina has become especially precious – and this painting keeps it.
