They are gateways to understanding the self and the cosmos, inviting collectors and viewers to not only observe but to engage, reflect, and perhaps find a piece of their own journey mirrored within her work.

Life and work

After graduating in architecture in 1992 and practicing her profession, Susanne Rikus spent time working in various European countries, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, Chicago and New York. A few months after being awarded the Höxter District Cultural Prize in 1994, her career in art and architecture was interrupted by a serious car accident. This existential experience became the basis of her artistic work.

Following dance training and guest studies in Vancouver (Canada) and lecturing in Chicago (Columbia College) and at the Holzminden-Hildesheim University of Applied Sciences, as well as numerous study trips, she now lives and works occasionally in Sardinia and Hawaii. She has been running her own gallery since 1996, since 2014 in the Heckmann-Höfe in Berlin-Mitte.

Art Gallery Susanne Rikus

Susanne Rikus combines the ancient knowledge of different cultures with intuitive creativity in her art. Her expressive painting combines powerful worlds of color and deep symbolic meanings. She integrates performance elements such as dance, music and song to make the energy of her works physically tangible. In her self-developed technique of transfer art, she processes photographs of historical places or natural landscapes with color pigments on canvas or transparent supports such as acrylic glass. By further processing the motifs with paint, she detaches them from their original meaning and places them in a new, lively context.

Her artistic exploration of her own near-death experience gave her deep insights into spiritual levels of consciousness, which she incorporates into her work. She sees herself in the tradition of pioneers such as Hilma af Klint, who dedicated themselves to spiritual art.

Artwork Interpretation:

The triptych format emphasizes a narrative journey, suggesting a passage from one state of being to another. The central panel, with its radiant, sun-like orb, represents a source of enlightenment and transformation. This element mirrors Rikus's near-death experience, which was a pivotal moment that deepened her connection to the cosmos and the energies that flow through all things. It symbolizes a portal or gateway—an invitation to transcend the ordinary and step into the sacred space of self-awareness and cosmic connection.

On the left, figures emerge in soft, flowing movements, their gestures pointing towards the center, as if guiding the viewer towards a deeper understanding or a calling from within. The presence of these figures can be seen as guardians or guides—perhaps reflections of Rikus's own journey through shamanic practices and her roles as both a healer and an artist. This aligns with her therapeutic background, where she has explored the human psyche and the subtle energies that influence our emotional and spiritual well-being.

The right panel introduces a sense of freedom and release. A figure, nude and uninhibited, reaches out towards the central orb, symbolizing the soul's quest for unity and truth. This act of reaching is a powerful metaphor for Rikus's own explorations in her art and life—a continuous search for answers and expressions of humanity's deepest desires and fears. The surrounding landscape, with its bold strokes of blue and orange, suggests a connection to the elemental forces of nature, echoing her time spent in the vibrant environments of Hawaii, Vancouver, and Sardinia.

This painting by Susanne Rikus serves as a vibrant testament to her journey as an artist, healer, and seeker of life’s deeper truths. The composition, with its striking use of color and form, symbolizes the interconnectedness of the human experience, the cosmos, and the earth—a theme that permeates Rikus’s work.
